Recently, I was speaking with a group of friends and they asked why the media keeps touting the power of antioxidants.  Should we take antioxidants? 

近,我與一群朋友聊天,他們問為什麼媒體仍持續鼓吹抗氧物的能力?我們應該採用抗氧物來保健嗎? 

First, I offered a little antioxidant 101.  Antioxidants “neutralize” free radicals (unstable, chemically reactive molecules). Free radical production is a byproduct of the body’s biological processes and are also used by our immune cells as little “bomblets” to kill pathogens. However, the body needs a balance of free-radicals, enough to do the job, but not enough to cause problems.

首先我要提供一點抗氧化物的指標性觀念给大家。抗氧化物能「中和」自由基自由基是不穩定化學反應分子 。產生自由基是身體生物過程的副產品,也是被我們的免疫細胞利用作為小小的炸彈以殺害病原體。是,身體需要平衡的自由基數量,足夠讓免疫細胞做工作就好,太多就會造成問題。

 

Environmental factors: pollution, sunlight, cigarette smoke – and physiological factors – diet, stress, lack of exercise –cause accelerated production of free radicals that lead to oxidation, very much like a banana peel that turns brown.

環境因素:空氣或水源汙染、太強的陽光香煙產生的二手煙等;生理因素節食、壓力、缺乏運動等也都會導致體內加速產生自由基而致氧化作用,就像香蕉果皮轉變成褐色般。

 

During oxidation, the DNA of cells can be damaged, which leads to premature aging, along with cell mutations and death. The end result, some researchers suspect, is that many diseases, including arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer's and atherosclerosis, may be due to an accumulation of such oxidative damage. [According to the National Cancer Institute, free radicals  can cause serious diseases such as cancer.]

在氧化作用期間,細胞DNA可能被傷害,而導致過早的老化、細胞突變和死亡。最終結果,一些研究員懷疑犯許多疾病包括:關節炎癌症、阿茲海默症(老年痴呆症)和動脈粥樣硬化等,也許都可歸咎於這樣的氧化作用損傷的累積。根據美國國家癌症機構的報導,過多的自由基可能導致嚴重的疾病,譬如:癌症。 

Hundreds of scientific studies have demonstrated that the phytonutrients (plant nutrients)—especially anthocyanins [the red-, blue-, and purple-pigmented compounds in fruits and vegetables] are powerful antioxidants capable of offering protection from, and even reversing,  damage caused by excessive amounts of free radicals.

數以百計的科學研究顯示出:植物營養素尤其是植物花青素(在水果和蔬菜中含有紅色藍色和紫色色素的化合物)是強有力的抗氧物能提供身體的保護,甚至能將因過量的自由基造成的組織損傷中扭轉恢復過來。 

In order to obtain the abundance of diverse phytonutrients needed for overall health and disease prevention, according to the Centers for Disease Control, it is important to eat 5 or more servings of different types of fruits and vegetables every day.  However, most of us do not consume this amount.

根據美國疾病管制中心的資料,為了獲得豐富且不同的植物營養素以營造健康和預防疾病,每天要吃五份或更多不同類型的水果和蔬菜是重要的原則。但是大多數的我們都沒有消耗到規定的這些數量。

Int J Obes (Lond). 2007 31:1023 ).  Other animal studies have reported that blueberry extracts lower body weight gains and body fat (Prior, R. et. al. The FASEB Journal. 21(6):A103. In addition to these compounds, TrimBerry Extreme is formulated with green tea extracts.  Green tea extracts have been shown in human trials to reduce body fat (Nago, T. et. al. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2005 81:122).
